The ITER Generic Site Safety Report has identified combustible substances which can pose explosion hazards in the ITER fusion reactor:
- Hydrogen from steam-metal reactions or from desorbing cryopumps
- Dust species of various first-wall materials (C, Be, W)
To control and mitigate hydrogen and dust hazards, new three-dimensional numerical tools are being developed for the simulation of hydrogen/dust explosions under ITER relevant conditions. The theoretical work is supported by the necessary hydrogen/dust explosion experiments.
