Flow and Combustion

The Flow and Combustion Engineering Team of the Institute for Nuclear and Energy Technology (IKET) of the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) performs safety analyses for

CO2-free energy systems in the areas:

- Fusion
- Hydrogen as Energy Carrier
- Nuclear Safety

using a systematic combination of experimental and computational tools.

Our activities include such tasks as the development and validation of environmental and public protection strategies against severe nuclear reactor accidents, the control of hydrogen and dust explosions in the planned ITER fusion reactor, and the safe use of hydrogen in a future hydrogen economy.

A common theme in all these activities is the safety related control of hydrogen. For this goal, a systematic analysis approach has been developed which allows us to model in detail the distribution and combustion of hydrogen with our own, specifically designed 3D-codes. Hazards can thus be identified, and effective countermeasures for risk mitigation be derived for any process or product involving hydrogen.

The numerical simulations are supported, complemented and validated by experiments in our Hydrogen Test Center. The center consists of various special test facilities for performing experiments on hydrogen distribution and combustion on small, medium and large geometric scales and under all safety relevant aspects.

The combination of these comprehensive test facilities with powerful numerical tools puts the team in a unique position to deal successfully with all kinds of safety related problems concerning hydrogen.
