Motivation

TRU (Np, Pu, Am, Cm,…) and fission products are components of nuclear waste produced by the operation of existing nuclear reactors. Because of their radio-toxicity, these elements have to be safely separated from the biosphere and stored until their final decay.

Several advanced nuclear reactor systems with TRU transmutation potential are proposed in Europe, such as MYRRHA and ASTRID. They can be built in the future in neighboring to Germany countries. KIT contributes to safety studies of these systems.

If TRUs are added to nuclear fuel and “burned” (transmuted) in advanced nuclear reactors, the TRU fraction in the stored nuclear waste will be much smaller; then the long-term storage risks will be strongly reduced.
