COSMOS: Critical-heat-flux On Smooth and MOdified Surfaces

The water-steam test loop is used to study the microscopic processes at modified surface structures during convection boiling near critical heat flux (CHF)

The low pressure water test loop has the following parameters:

 

Maximum pressure:

2 bar
Maximum mass flow: 0.5 kg/s
Maximum power: 75 kW

The general objective is to study safety-relevant components of light water reactors (e.g. fuel assembly) in terms of heat removal, boiling crisis, pressure loss, and the influence of the material used on these parameters, e.g. by surface modification. For the investigation of the microscopic processes at the modified surface structure during convection boiling near critical heat flux (CHF) high speed photography is being used.
